I am not in the news business. But I really like this approach of keep it simple and inexpensive. Yeah, there are some issues with lighting and sound I'd like to see addressed but for run-and-gun news reporting, I think this is exactly how it should be for newspaper online media. I'd rather see more good stories, than just a few perfectly executed stories. Most people don't care about the sound and video quality nearly as much as those in the video business care about it.

Web user interface research does indeed show that multimedia keeps visitors on web sites for much longer. When the business is about selling eyeballs to advertisers, that is critical. I hope this approach is continued at other paper sites too.

I'm so behind on your blog, SO BEHIND!

But I'm glad you wrote about this. I'm still really processing the entire incident and what it means for our career. But really also what it means for myself internally. It was quite a week, and emotionally taxing to say the least.

I'm glad you like the idea for spot.us.

Bottom line: There is no reason not to apply to the Knight News Challenge grant. I'm certainly glad I did - it's been a great opportunity for me to explore what otherwise would have been just an idea.

Capturing audio with an ipod and a mic isn't something I would have thought about but it is a great idea since most, if not all, cameras in and around the Flip price range don't have a mic input. Needless to say, the built-in mics are horrible. I'd be interested to know if there if the audio captured on the iPod slips out of sync with the video. My understanding is that some of the digital audio recorders record at a different "frame rate" than most cameras. Regardless, it is a great, innovative way to produce video content on the cheap.

Apology accepted, but not really necessary. I respect what you're doing, chronicling the change in our media environment. I believe it was an appropriate literary device, to set up my offhand comment as a foil for Don.

I'll be interested to follow your reporting on this blog and on MediaShift.
